Torchiere floor lamps (also: uplights), usually as floor-standing or wall lights, direct their light mainly upwards toward the ceiling, and with adjustable reflectors also toward the part of the wall close to the ceiling. From there it is reflected into the room as indirect lighting. In torchiere floor lamps with a direct light component, the reflector is light-permeable downwards.
