LED flickers or flickers visibly – Causes & Solutions

LED flickers when switched on or continues to flicker permanently? This problem is widespread and not only causes irritation – it can also cause headaches or indicate a faulty installation. In this article, you will learn why LED lights flicker, which technical causes are behind it, and how to fix the problem permanently.

Possible causes of LED light source flickering

1. Unsuitable dimmer

Many older dimmers were developed for incandescent bulbs or halogen lamps and are not compatible with modern LEDs. They generate unstable voltage or allow residual currents to pass through, which leads to visible flickering or irregular light.

Solution: Use only LED-compatible dimmers with trailing-edge technology and check compatibility with the respective light source.

2. Fluctuating mains voltage or disturbances in the power grid

In some buildings – especially older buildings or where the power supply is unstable – the voltage can drop briefly. LEDs react more sensitively to such fluctuations than traditional light sources.

Solution: A voltage stabilizer or LED driver with buffer can help compensate for such influences.

3. Low-quality LED light sources

Cheaply manufactured LEDs (e.g. from the Far East) often do not have sufficient electronics for voltage stabilization. They therefore flicker even with minor deviations or age prematurely.

Solution: Look for certified branded products with CE marking, ideally from manufacturers with VDE certification.

4. Frequency flicker caused by poor electronics

Even if the flickering is not visible, so-called flicker can occur in the range of 100–120 Hz. This flickering light can strain the human nervous system, even if it remains unconscious.

Solution: Choose LED light sources with Flicker-Free technology. These are especially suitable for sensitive areas such as offices, children's rooms, or for people with migraines.

5. Afterglow or residual voltage

Glowing after switch-off is a different phenomenon, which we have already described in detail here.

Our expert tip: How to test your LED for flicker

Use the camera function of your smartphone and point it at the switched-on LED light. If dark stripes or flicker patterns are visible, it is high-frequency flicker.

Conclusion: LED flickering? Here's what you can do!

Flickering LEDs are not random, but the result of technical causes. With the right dimmer, high-quality light sources, and if necessary an additional LED driver, the problems can be reliably solved in most cases.

If you have questions or uncertainties, we recommend: Have the installation checked by a specialist company.
