General lighting (for living spaces sometimes also: basic lighting) is the uniform and even illumination of a room. It provides an overview and enables orientation. Specific visual tasks at individual locations or in room zones are not taken into account. General lighting ensures that the architecture, the objects, and the people in the room are visible. Individual areas can be additionally illuminated.
